ALTERNATIVE AIRPORT LOUNGE

For our last collaboration project, my senior studio partnered with PAGE to create a corporate interior space: an alternative airport lounge.

Directed towards the ever-increasing crowd of young travelers—students studying abroad, individuals on a gap year—The Lounge is a homey alternative for those who want all of the amenities an airport lounge has to offer, but are travelling on a tighter budget.

Taking the concept of a hostel and transporting it into an alternative airport lounge, the interior of The Lounge is abound with areas that foster community. A large family dining table, kitchen, and living area provide spaces for collaboration and intellectual conversation, while more private niches are available for those who need secluded space to get work done or simply catch up on some sleep. Comfortable lounge furniture, private bathrooms, and showers create a place for guests to relax and refresh before their flight. Moreover, the space contains all of the amenities any tech savvy young adult could possibly need: video conferencing, computer access stations, copy/print areas, ample outlets, and of course high-speed Wi-Fi.

With a “your mother’s not here” frame of mind, guests will be encouraged to clean up after themselves, saving costs on staffing and thus keeping The Lounge’s low entrance fee.

All of the above can be found in an edgy, modern, and eclectic space that fosters a home away from home atmosphere no matter where in the world an independent traveler might find himself.

For this particular project, I was challenged to move away from photo-realistic renderings and utilize a different format to showcase my work. After creating a floorplan in AutoCAD, I modeled the space in SketchUp, and used a combination of SketchUp and Adobe Photoshop to create collage-like renderings for my presentation.
